Capt. Gary Melvin says officers responded Wednesday afternoon to a Walmart store on Route 13, where they found store employees trying to calm the woman down in a restroom.
Melvin says the woman, 36-year-old Melanie Acree of Harrington, was visibly intoxicated and that officers later learned she had driven to the store while intoxicated. Police say they could not charge Acree with drunken driving because they did not see her in the car.
The News Journal of Wilmington, Del., reports Acree was charged with endangering the welfare of a child and disorderly conduct.
Melvin says the children were turned over to their father unharmed.
