SPCA free pet adoption weekend

PHILADELPHIA - July 15, 2011

The SPCA is always looking for people to adopt pets, but there is urgency with the number of cases in recent weeks of hoarded pets being carried out of home after home.

"I feel bad for the people who did that," said Bridgett Pares. "I know that their heart is in the right place, they're not doing it because they're mean spirited, but it's not healthy for the animals."

Bridgett Pares and her daughter Astrid are looking for a new pet.

"I'm looking for a cat," says Astrid.

And her parents plan to get one after the PSPCA decided to waive all adoption fees.

People can typically pay anywhere from $10 to $275 to adopt an animal.

"I hope people take the advice of SPCA and come on down," said Wendy Marano.

The Pennsylvania SPCA in Hunting Park has more animals than it can handle, and they are hoping people will save the life of a pet on Saturday.

SPCA officers discovered 29 cats and one dog inside a home on Wheeler Street in Southwest Philadelphia recently, and in Tacony, more than 40 cats were found in what investigators called deplorable conditions.

"In one case, the animals were all in very good condition, and they are available for adoption. In the second case, we're still nursing some of them back to health and then they will be available," said Marano.

Many people came out on Friday to see if any of the rescued pets would be right for them.

"We don't want to see any animals put down or anything because they can't find a home," said Joseph Branch.

Free adoptions are available at the PSPCA at 350 E. Erie Avenue location and at the ACCT Shelter at 111 West Hunting Park Avenue from 8:00am to 8:00pm on Saturday and Sunday.
