Avoiding the heat and cabin fever

PHILADELPHIA - July 21, 2011

Danka Rauer's daughters have been keeping cool in their backyard sprinkler, but this morning, they headed to the Walnut West Branch of the Philadelphia Free Library.

Callina and Isabella joined dozens of other neighborhood children in the library's air-conditioned learning center for a presentation from the Philadelphia Museum of Art, followed by arts and crafts.

At the Christian Street YMCA, hundreds of campers were burning off energy, but keeping cool, at the second-annual Kiddie Olympics.

The event is meant to teach kids about health and fitness, but like all Y Camp activities, it was moved inside once the mercury hit 90 degrees.

Malls were another hot spot for keeping kids' cool.

Sandi Myers said it was just too hot to let her five kids ride bikes outside at home, so they celebrated 6-year-old Seth's birthday at Build-A-Bear.
