Teen dies at football camp in Berks County

READING, Pa. - July 23, 2011

The Berks County Coroner's office said Samuel Gitt, 17, collapsed while in a dormitory on campus and was taken to Reading Hospital. Officials said Gitt died at the hospital.

An autopsy on Saturday was inconclusive, but Gitt's death was not heat-related, officials at the coroner's office said.

Gitt was a senior at Boiling Springs High School in Cumberland County. Officials at Albright said he was participating in a football camp for about 300 high school football players from across Pennsylvania.

The camp was slated to run through Sunday, but Albright spokeswoman Barbara Marshall said they sent everyone home Saturday morning because of the death.

Marshall said coaches took extra precautions to protect the kids participating in the camp.

"Our coaches, who were running the camp, and the team coaches, were vigilant about making sure that those students were well taken care of and well hydrated," she said.

In a news release, the South Middleton School District, which includes Boiling Springs, said counselors will be available for students there on Monday.
