Del. inmate's lawyers work to halt execution

WILMINGTON, Del. - July 27, 2011

Robert Jackson III is currently set to die early Friday in what would be Delaware's first execution since 2005. Two hearings scheduled for Wednesday, however, could result in a stay of execution.

In the first hearing, a federal judge in Wilmington will hear arguments over whether Jackson should be allowed to re-open a lawsuit challenging the state's execution practices. At an afternoon hearing in Dover, the Delaware Supreme Court will hear arguments that Jackson's execution should be stayed while the U.S. Supreme Court considers his appeal.
