Thousands lose power in severe storms in NJ

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) - July 30, 2011

Jersey Central Power & Light says more than 20,000 customers lost power in Ocean County on Friday night, mostly in Jackson, Lakewood and Brick. But all customers had power restored by Saturday morning.

Jim Hayes of the National Weather Service says the storm brought heavy rain and wind gusts of 70 mph.

Authorities say no one was seriously injured in the storm. But dozens of people were evacuated from a Lakewood apartment building after strong winds blew off part of its roof.

Officials say about 60 displaced residents were being housed in a temporary shelter in the township. It was hoped that all the residents would be back in the building by Monday morning at the latest.
