Beachwood Police Chief William Cairns says the teens mixed several ingredients, including chlorine, when the blast occurred in a home Tuesday night.
Cairns told The Star-Ledger of Newark the teens were attempting to make what they accomplished and there's no indication that it was anything more than an experiment.
The 17-year-old was treated for minor burns to his face, chest, arms and eyes. The others were not injured.
No names have been released.
