Mayor Nutter out for 2nd night of curfew

PHILADELPHIA - August 13, 2011

The Mayor says parents and teenagers are getting the message.

With thousands of teens out on city streets each weekend, there have been only 50 violators of the newly imposed curfew.

There was another large police presence in Center City Saturday night, and the 9:00pm curfew for those 17 and under remains.

"If your child is out after curfew, tall, short, nice, not so nice, the curfew is the curfew is the curfew, buy a watch," said Mayor Nutter.

Saturday morning found several violators and their parents unhappy.

"Directly after 9:00pm, you are not even giving them time, so by 8:59, they're supposed to be inside the house. That's ridiculous," said Shantel Powell.

Action News captured a caravan of teens who violated the new curfew being hauled in late Friday night.

Officers at the 6th Police District slapped parents with a warning, and after hours of waiting to be processed, children were released to their parents.

One man said that his 14 year old daughter was out with two 18 year old friends when she was handcuffed.

"I'm sure whatever Mayor Nutter tried to do wasn't suppose to have this effect on the good children in the city who are just trying to have some fun before they go back to school in a couple of weeks," said Ivan Hicks.

Mayor Nutter responded to those parents.

"We'll work with the parents, but we're not going to raise your kids for you, and good kids for the most part are going to follow the law, they're parents are going to pay attention to what's going on and they're not going to have a problem," said Mayor Nutter.

Some parents who had to pick up their kids took responsibility.

"I'm definitely going to dig into his situation as soon we leave here," said Keenan Chambers.

Peggy Konzerowsky and her daughter spent time at the Northern Liberties Recreation Center Saturday afternoon.

Before meeting with police officers in Love Park Saturday night, Mayor Nutter took to the bowling lanes in Juniata.

With cameras rolling and the pressure on, the Mayor got a strike his first time up. He wanted to show the 100 kids in attendance his skills and that there are positive activities for them.

"On a Saturday night, young people can be out, having a good time at a place where it's very positive and a good environment and we're going to continue to do more and more of these things," Mayor Nutter said.

At least 20 recreation centers around the city held extended hours to give teenagers something to do.

And for the parents who received warnings Friday night, they could be fined up to $500 if there is a second violation.

Philadelphia Parks & Recreation released a list of community centers with extended hours to give young people a place to go during the curfew:
