Italian tenor dies in Sicily

ROME (AP) - September 5, 2011

The media office of Garibaldi Hospital in Catania says 43-year-old Licitra died Monday morning and that his family agreed to make his organs available for transplant.

The hospital says Lictra crashed his scooter into a wall near the Sicilian town of Ragusa the night of Aug. 27 after suffering an interruption of blood in the brain. He suffered head and chest injuries and underwent surgery.

Licitra got his big break subbing for Luciano Pavarotti at New York's Metropolitan Opera in 2002 during a gala performance of Puccini's "Tosca." He won ovations for his two big arias. Licitra debuted in Parma, Italy, in 1998 and also sang at La Scala.
