South Jersey authorities are trying to determine what caused a flash fire that claimed the life of a man who was recovering from brain surgery.

Heat and flames prevented authorities from rescuing the man from his apartment in Woodbine Monday.

Woodbine Fire Chief Clarence Ryan told The Press of Atlantic City the fire built up with combustible gases and then "everything ignites in the room."

The man's name has not been released.

The chief says the cause is not considered suspicious.
