It's going to be a cold semester

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - September 15, 2011

Students at the University of Virginia's historic campus won't be allowed to light their fireplaces.

U.Va. inspectors have found cracks in more than 100 chimneys at the Thomas Jefferson-designed Academical Village.

Officials at the Charlottesville school are considering options including repairs or a permanent ban on fireplace use.

There are accounts in old U.Va. yearbooks of Edgar Allan Poe breaking up furniture and burning it in his fireplace in 1826.
