Pa. man fighting cruelty charges over horse

LANCASTER, Pa. - September 22, 2011

The Intelligencer Journal/Lancaster New Era reports Joseph Meyer says he was trying to give his mare, Dusty, a chance to recover from an infection when the Humane League of Lancaster County seized and destroyed her last summer.

Prosecutors say Dusty had open sores and labored breathing and needed medical attention but Meyer tried to treat the horse himself at his Allimax Farm in Columbia.

The Journal/New Era report says Meyer told the court he'd seen horses recover from worse injuries and the humane league didn't give the horse enough time to get better.

A county judge could announce his decision on Meyer's appeal next week.
