NJ woman gives up illegal chickens

LOWER TOWNSHIP, N.J. - September 29, 2011

Clare Nagel had the Rhode Island Reds carted away to an undisclosed location Wednesday, one day before the deadline imposed by Lower Township officials.

The 80-year-old acquired the chickens in April so she could have her own eggs. But a neighbor complained and Nagel was told she needed at least an acre of land to keep farm animals.

Officials told Nagel to seek a variance. But Nagel said the process was too costly.

Nagel told The Press of Atlantic City she has circulated a petition, which has more than 200 signatures, seeking to change the rule.
