The New Castle County police department is receiving a $1.2 million grant from the U.S. Department of Justice to hire more officers.

Sens. Tom Carper and Chris Coons and Rep. John Carney announced the grant on Thursday. WDEL-AM reports the grant will allow New Castle to hire, retain and provide benefits for six new officers over three years.

The federal funding comes from the Justice Department's Community Oriented Policing Services program, known as COPS.
