Crews were dispatched at about 10:15 a.m. to the 800 block of Kirkwood Street in the city's east side. A second alarm was called at 10:30.
Flames spread through the roofs of half a dozen homes on the block before the fire was placed under control at 11:17 a.m.
Three fire fighters were injured in the battle and approximately six families were displaced by the fire.
One of the injured firefighters suffered a chest injury and was transported to an area hospital. Two others were evaluated at the scene.
The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
