Explosion reported after crash in Norristown

NORRISTOWN - October 7, 2011

The truck smashed into the car, and then a utility pole at Dekalb and Brown Streets in Norristown.

The pole broke off, pulling down wires, and causing a 12,000-volt surge that incinerated both the workers' truck and a parked car.

All four people in the pickup truck managed to escape unharmed.

The power surge was so strong, it also blew a small hole in the street. PECO plans to replace the utility pole.

Meanwhile police are trying to figure out why the pickup truck driver crashed in the first place.

About 10 PECO customers remain without power at this time. Crews are working on the utility and hope to restore power by mid afternoon.
