NJ Turnpike toll collector sentenced for theft

TRENTON, N.J. - October 7, 2011

The judge ordered 58-year-old John Filippine to spend 364 days in jail and pay $2,282 in restitution.

Prosecutors say the Columbus resident and two other toll collectors obtained toll tickets near the southern New Jersey interchanges where they worked. Prosecutors say the men substituted them for tickets from motorists who traveled a longer distance and paid higher tolls. The collectors pocketed the difference.

A routine audit uncovered discrepancies.

The other collectors also were sentenced to nearly a year in jail.
