A second elderly woman has died after a car went through a guardrail and plunged down a steep embankment into a Philadelphia creek.

Police say the passenger died overnight, hours after the car she was riding in landed upside down in the Pennypack Creek in Northeast Philadelphia.

Action News has learned that the woman who died overnight is 71-year-old Elizabeth Jones.

The driver, 81-year-old Shirley Dougherty, was pronounced dead at the scene Monday afternoon.

Both Dougherty and Jones lived on the 600 block of Disston Street in Philadelphia.

Investigators say the 2006 Lincoln Town Car was driving slowly when it crashed through the railing and overturned below in the creek around 1:30 p.m.

The car was pulled from the creek Monday evening. It will be checked for mechanical problems.
