First lady sneaks out 'as much as possible'

WASHINGTON (AP) - October 12, 2011

The first lady says she sneaks out of the White House "as much as possible." She says she once took family dog Bo to the pet store Petco and almost went unrecognized. The cashier eventually realized who she was from her credit card.

Last month, Mrs. Obama shopped at a suburban Virginia Target store, her face masked by a baseball cap and sunglasses. The first lady says it's easy to go unnoticed when she shows up at places where no one expects her, like Starbucks or Chipotle.

Mrs. Obama says the trips outside the White House bubble help her and her daughters maintain a sense of normalcy. The first lady spoke during an interview on NBC's "Today" show.
