Priest pleads guilty to theft from parishioner

WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) - November 20, 2011

Prosecutors say 62-year-old Rev. Michael Angeloni pleaded guilty Thursday to one count of theft of more than $100,000. The News Journal of Wilmington reports that Angeloni faces up to 15 years in prison when he is sentenced in February.

Prosecutors say Angeloni stole the money from a parishioner of the Church of the Holy Child, where he served as assistant pastor. They say Angeloni solicited money from the victim to pay certain expenses but used the money for other purposes. The investigation began in February after Wilmington Trust noticed suspicious activity on the victim's account.

The diocese suspended Angeloni from exercising his priestly duties or dressing as a priest in April.
