Philly museum brings 'Birds of America' to public

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - November 26, 2011

Every weekday at 3:15 p.m., a white-gloved staff member of the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia lifts the locked protective cover from John James Audubon's influential book, "The Birds of America," and turns one of the large pages to reveal the day's bird.

People turn out every day to catch a glimpse of the new bird on display.

The complete set of 435 hand-colored engravings on paper, each measuring about 2 feet by 3 feet, cost $1,000 in the mid-1800s. A copy sold last year for a record-breaking $11.5 million.
