Abandoned horse found in Philadelphia

PHILADELPHIA - November 30, 2011

The horse was discovered in a vacant lot in the 3500 block of Ella Street on November 27th.

Officers went there after getting a tip call from a concerned citizen after the horse suddenly showed up.

The SPCA said the white horse, described as "Arabian-type," was in poor condition - it was underweight, malnourished and had a large infected wound beneath its right elbow.

"When our officers responded, no one came forward to claim the horse. The horse was brought back the Pennsylvania SPCA headquarters where it is being stabled and is receiving veterinary care while officers work to identify the owner," said George Bengal, the director of humane law enforcement for the SPCA.

While officers are following some leads, they are still asking anyone with information to call the Pennsylvania SPCA at 215-426-6304 Ext. 270.
