Driver accelerates, strikes 2 cars and house

HOCKESSIN, Del. - December 11, 2011

A New Castle County building inspector responded to the scene and determined the home was unfit for habitation due to the structural damage.

At 4:46 p.m. Sunday, County Police responded to a home in the unit block of Salina Court for a report of a car that crashed into a home.

When police arrived, they discovered a 2009 BMW partially protruding from the front of the home and observed three other vehicles that had been damaged, two of which were in the driveway and another that was inside the garage.

The investigation revealed the driver, later identified as a N.A. Chakkaravarthi, a 67-year-old male who resides in the Hockessin area, was headed into his friend's driveway when he depressed the accelerator instead of the brake pedal, causing his vehicle to lunge ahead and strike a white Toyota Corolla that was parked in the driveway.

The Toyota Corolla was pushed into the garage door where it struck an Acura vehicle that was parked inside the garage, causing structural damage to the attached garage area.

The BMW then sideswiped a Honda minivan that was parked next to the Toyota before striking the residence between the garage and main part of the home.

A 62-year-old female passenger in the vehicle sustained a scratch to her face and refused medical treatment.

Chakkaravarthi was not injured as a result of the crash.

He was cited for careless driving.
