Trevor Murphy pleaded guilty to failure to report a fatal boating accident in Municipal Court in Berkeley Township Wednesday.
Authorities said the 18-year-old and childhood friend Ryan Worrall had been drinking when they got in the canoe and it capsized in June.
Murphy says he just went home.
An off-duty state trooper riding a personal watercraft found Worrall's body more than 12 hours later.
The Asbury Park Press reports the guilty plea amounts to $500 fine and $30 in court costs.
