Suspect shot with own gun in Swarthmore holdup

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - December 15, 2011

When police arrived to the scene, the first thing they found was a red car in the strip mall parking lot. The driver of the car was wounded and passed out.

They found their suspect.

Police say the male driver was being sought for an attempted armed robbery that took place minutes before and 80 yards away.

The incident happened at 2:45 p.m. at the Dollar Magic store in the 700 block of Chester Road.

Officials say the man went into the store trying to rob it and shot a clerk.

The employee was shot in the shoulder and is expected to recover.

A struggle then ensued between the clerk and the suspect.

That is when the suspect was shot, but police say, not by the clerk.

"The suspect apparently shot himself during the struggle, shot himself in the pelvic area, may have hit an artery," Springfield Police Chief Joe Daley said.

The suspect is in critical condition at Crozer Chester Medical Center

His identity has not been released.
