5-alarm fire engulfing buildings in San Francisco

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - December 22, 2011

Fire Chief Joanne Hayes-White says the fire that engulfed three buildings raged for about three hours Thursday afternoon before it was brought under control around 3 p.m.

The blaze sent one firefighter to the hospital with a burn to the neck, and another was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation. A civilian was also hospitalized after inhaling smoke.

Hayes-White says the fire started in one of the neighborhood's trademark three-story Victorian homes and spread to a nearby apartment building and a single-family home. A total of 32 dwellings were destroyed.

At the fire's peak, about 150 firefighters were on the scene. That's about half the city's daytime firefighting force.

The cause of the blaze is not yet known.
