Catholic school students rally at basketball games

PHILADELPHIA - January 6, 2012

Parents and students are still reeling from the bombshell from the Archdiocese of Philadelphia.

"And I just wish there was something I could say or do to change things, but there isn't," said Lisa Jones.

The emotions were strong once it started to sink in that Saint Hubert Catholic High School for Girls in Mayfair will close.

It will be the last season that Lisa Jones' daughter will play basketball in that gym.

"It's just horrible, it really is," said Jones. "I really expected her to finish here but it's not going to happen."

Students held a rally outside of Saint Hubert.

"Everyone here loves Saint Hubert, there are girls who don't even go here anymore, there are girls who haven't even registered yet," said Amy Mallon.

Parents stood by in support.

"These kids now are going to go to another school and be the new kids on the block, and you know it's a shame," said Chris Labovitz.

Maryann Nathaniel's daughter is a junior at Saint Hubert and her son attends West Philadelphia Catholic High School which is also on the chopping block. She is worried about the rest of the semester.

"The distractions, the pressure and just thinking about where they're going to have to go, it's fresh," said Maryann.

"The catholic school owes something to this community as well," said Howard Conway. There are a lot of schools closing and it's really not fair."

At Conwell Egan in Bucks County, the varsity basketball players took on Bonner Prendergast; a tough game because both schools will be shut down.

Many of the parents say they are trying to get over the shock before they start thinking about what is next for their children.
