Delores Barnes was 88.
She got into local politics in the 1970s after her husband, a town committeeman died. The Republican became mayor of the shore community became mayor in 1979.
Police say a car driven by 88-year-old Clara Maher collided with the vehicle Barnes was driving at an intersection along Route 72 just after 10 a.m. Wednesday.
Maher, who also lives in Stafford's Manahawkin section, had minor injuries.
Police tell The Asbury Park Press no charges have been filed.
