Two elderly men caught in crossfire in W. Phila

WEST PHILADELPHIA - December 30, 2011

The double shooting happened just after 8:30 Friday night near 41st and Parrish streets.

The gunman was running down the sidewalk exchanging shots with an unknown male inside of a moving car when both victims were caught in the cross fire.

The victim in the wheelchair, 69, was shot multiple times in the torso. The other victim, 81, was shot in the head.

Authorities say neither victim was the intended target.

Both men were taken to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania where the 69-year-old is listed in critical but stable condition and the man in his 80s is listed in critical condition.

Shell casings were found littering the block along 41st street. Officers searched for the shooters but were unable to locate them.

"It's tragic. We're one day from the New Year and two seniors in the community are hurt, because two knuckleheads were shooting at cars," said Lt. John Walker.

Now police are urging the community to come forward and give information that will help them catch the gunmen.

"These people are dangerous to the community. Shooting while seniors and kids are outside on a nice day like this, we need to get these people off of the community," said Lt. Walker.

Anyone with information regarding the crime is asked to immediately contact police.
