Palmyra man recreates hometown in his basement

PALMYRA, N.J. - January 2, 2012

"I just like to put things together. I live by myself and sometimes I get tired of watching television and I just have to be doing something with my hands," he said.

The fun part of Spalding's display is the local flavor.

He's painstakingly recreated recognizable parts of Palmyra, sketching buildings like the Independence Fire Company, Park Tavern and Borough Hall.

He later builds and paints the replicas to look like the real thing.

Spalding says he makes most of his models with discarded material from the Roger Wilco Liquor Store nearby.

He's worked there for 65-years and has it memorialized in his model train display.

Spalding has also recreated the Atlantic City skyline, complete with the boardwalk and casinos.

"I started with one and I liked it. Then it went to two and three, now I have to build another one since there's a new one going up," he said.

Wanting to share his ever-expanding creation, each year Spalding opens his house during the holidays so area residents can enjoy his train display that features places many people are very familiar with.

"I get a kick from the kids that come down. Their eyeballs just about pop out," he said.

The residents who have seen his display, appreciate the hard work he's put into it.

"It's great. Every year it's a little different, he adds a little bit more to it. It's great for the kids and they love it," said Mike Milloy.

Even with the massive size of his project, Spalding says he is not finished.

There's a little space left in his basement and he's thinking about recreating Washington D.C.
