32 fire fatalities in 2011

PHILADELPHIA - January 3, 2012

The fire department released its fire stats for 2011.

There were 32 fire fatalities last year and Commissioner Lloyd Ayers says 27 of them may have been prevented with smoke alarms.

"30 was the lowest in dept history, it went up to 33, it's down now to 32 so we see it's being sustained, but we want to go after that, we want make sure that we get it down to zero, that's our goal," Commissioner Ayers said.

If city residents need smoke alarms and cannot afford them, the commissioner urges those individuals to call the smoke alarm hotline at 215-686-1176.
