Study questions long-term success of nicotine aid

BOSTON, MASS.,January 10, 2012

A new study shows that after following 800 people for several years, doctors found that nicotine replacement did NOT improve the odds of quitting for good, even with counseling.

Almost a third of all the quitters relapsed, and the rate was the same for those using nicotine therapy as those who didn't.

Other doctors who treat smokers say that's because many people don't use nicotine replacement correctly, or for long enough.

It appears counseling, motivation, and support from friends and family can make the difference between those who quit for good and those who relapse.
