Robbery suspects fire at police after chase

KENSINGTON - January 10, 2012

The incident began in the area of Kensington Avenue and Somerset Street shortly after 7:00 p.m..

A woman flagged down police, telling them she was robbed.

The victim was able to point out to police the suspects who robbed her; they were inside a moving vehicle.

Police attempted to stop the vehicle, but the suspects refused.

The men nearly ran down an officer, which prompted a police assist and a brief pursuit.

The pursuit culminated in the area of the 2100 block of East Cumberland Street.

There, the men, all armed with guns, exited the car.

"After about a few seconds, the passenger in the suspect vehicle fires a gun at the officers, fires multiple shots. Fortunately, none of the officers were hurt," Captain Mike Cram of the Philadelphia Police Department said.

Police managed to chase down two of the three suspects along the block. They also recovered three guns.

The third man managed to run a few blocks and break into a home along the 2300 block of East Cumberland Street where he was captured.

It's not known if anyone was in the home at the time.
