The crash happened around 11:35 a.m. in the 300 block of Kirkwood Highway in Elsmere, Delaware.
The car, driven by a 70-year-old woman, was travelling westbound when it slammed into a trash truck heading eastbound.
Medics quickly responded and found the woman in cardiac arrest. She was rushed to the hospital in critical condition.
The driver of the trash truck was not hospitalized.
