Philadelphia Home Show opens

PHILADELPHIA - January 14, 2012

It's a Philadelphia favorite and it opened Saturday at the Pennsylvania Convention Center.

It is an annual winter ritual; a sojourn to the Philadelphia Home Show.

If you want to remodel your bathroom or have trouble with your carpets, the Philadelphia Home Show is where you want to be.

Need ratcheting pruning shears, or an iron rail hammered out by a Lancaster craftsman, you can find them in the aisles of the PA Convention Center.

For Thomisina Goins and husband Al, the home show is a time to restock.

"I always buy Tupperware because he burns it in the microwave," said Thomisina.

Robin Fey is looking for a hot tub.

"We are looking for something small and compact," she said pointing out one that she found to be perfect.

Not big enough how? How about a prefab swimming pool? A South Jersey firm makes them with a price tag about $27,000 installed.

Or maybe what you always wanted was a stand-alone infrared sauna with a CD player with crown molding. It runs for about $2,000.

At Sauna Magic, people were buying. Exhibitors at the show are saying that after 3 tough years, consumers are starting to spend again.

But unlike pre-recession days, people are not buying new homes and putting in new kitchens, they are staying put and redoing.

"We feel we are on the upswing with remodeling; no new construction, remodeling," said John Mitchell from Cabinet Gallery.

Another driver again this year is eco-friendly living.

"I would like my house to be environmentally sound," said Ophelia Hurst. "I want some green ideas."

With government incentives, solar companies say it is not only good for Mother Nature, but for consumers wallets.
