2 dead, 1 critical in Kelly Drive multi-vehicle crash

FAIRMOUNT PARK - January 16, 2012

Witness Abraham Kim is shaken, but grateful.

"It was scary because we were right there; we were actually about to feel the impact first, but since [the driver of our car] pressed on the brake - it could have been us," Kim said.

Kim watched as a Volkswagen Jetta and a minivan collided head-on shortly after 3:00 p.m. on Kelly Drive near the Strawberry Mansion Bridge.

"The Volkswagen Jetta starts shaking and as soon as it starts shaking he got really concerned so he pressed on the brake and, as soon as he pressed on the brake, the car swerves to the opposing lane and then it hits the minivan," Kim said.

The impact trapped a man and a woman inside the Jetta. Rescue crews had to cut off the roof, but the victims were already dead.

A female driver of the minivan was rushed to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in critical condition.

"We're in the very early stages of the investigation and we're just getting the ball rolling with this," Lt. Ray Murphy of the Philadelphia Police Department said.

Police and eye witnesses say it appears the Jetta swerved into the northbound lanes and hit the minivan.

Why the driver lost control is still under investigation.

Investigators say it appears speed was the factor with the driver of the Jetta.

Names of the deceased have not been released pending notification of next of kin.

Kelly Drive was closed in both directions for close to three hours. It reopened around 5:50 p.m.
