The gunman opened fire at an unmarked police vehicle near the intersection of Summerdale Avenue and Brill Street just before 1am.
The officer was on routine patrol when gunfire rang out and struck near the patrol car he was driving.
K9 dogs and SWAT officers were called in and the suspect was tracked down to a home in the 800 block of Brill Street.
Police arrested the gunman and recovered a handgun believed to be the weapon.
No word yet on why the suspect opened fire at the police.
