2 armed men attack employee, rob jewelry store

HADDON HEIGHTS, N.J. - January 26, 2012

Despite the large windows of New York Gold Exchange on Black Horse Pike, no one saw the attack unfold or heard the victim pleading with the robbers around 10:00 a.m. Thursday.

Police say the men wanted the employee to open the safe.

He told them he didn't have the combination so they dragged him into the back room.

Along the way, the robbers used their guns and boots to beat the man who grabbed onto chairs and, most likely, feared if they got him into that room, he wouldn't come out alive.

Once the door was closed, investigators say he went through three minutes of hell.

"They took him in the back and beat him up like he was a dog and even a dog should not be treated this way," store owner Denise Loukeris said.

Loukeris says after the beating, the thieves walked out and raided a counter, stealing jewelry.

Cameras captured a decent image of them.

"They're covered with hats on, but you can see their faces, Someone out there has got to know and has seen these guys before," Haddon Heights Police Detective Steve Graham said.

The worker whose name has not been released was able to get help.

He was rushed to Cooper University Hospital with severe head injuries.

"Come in, take the whole store, but leave the guy alone, he just works," Loukeris said.

The employee tells police he believes one of the suspects had a limp.

They are said to be between the ages of 35 and 40.
