NE Phila. resident finds body in creek near home

NORTHEAST PHILADELPHIA - January 29, 2012

The body was that of a young man found face down in a creek behind the 3500 block of Vinton Road around 1:00pm Sunday afternoon.

John Del Ricci was behind his home here 3500 block of Vinton feeding the ducks along the Poquessing Creek when he made the terrible discovery.

"All of a sudden I see a shadow in the creek. As I got closer, I realized it was a body, and got my kids in the house," explained Del Ricci. "I had three children with me. I got them in the house and called 911 right away."

Northeast Detectives began combing the area for evidence.

Detectives on scene say initial indications are that the death is not suspicious, but what happened is still unclear.

They describe the victim as a Latino teenage boy.

No identification was found on scene.

"It's a shame," said Del Ricci. "It's really a shame. I feel bad for the family."

Del Ricci and other neighbors say teenagers often hang out along the creek, and while it's only a couple of feet deep, the frigid water can still be fatal.

"I wish kids would learn from this. We yell at the kids all the time to get out of the creek, and this is the outcome," said Del Ricci.
