Montco murder suspect extradicted back to Pa.

POTTSTOWN, Pa. - March 5, 2012

Edwin Carrero was apprehended in Broward County, Florida back on February 7, 2012 for the murder of Alicia Schmidt.

Carrero was arraigned on Saturday and held without bail. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for March 22, 2012.

The arrest stems from Thursday, February 2, when Pottstown police responded to Schmidt's residence located at 424 Cherry Street in Pottstown Borough.

Upon arrival, responding officers found 31-year-old Alicia Schmidt dead at the bottom of the basement stairs. Her two children, ages 7 and 12, were found unharmed in second floor bedrooms.

On that same day, detectives interviewed Nicole Carrero, who is the ex-wife of 32-year-old Edwin Carrero.

Nicole Carrero said that Edwin Carrero has been in a relationship with Alicia Schmidt and that he has been living at 424 Cherry Street.

Nicole Carrero said that she received a phone call at 6:35 a.m that day from Edwin Carrero.

Carrero told Nicole that he may have killed Alicia. Edwin Carrero told Nicole that he choked Alicia and pushed her down the steps of the basement.

An autopsy was performed on the deceased by the Montgomery County Coroner's Office. The cause of death was broad ligature strangulation; the manner of death was homicide.

On Tuesday, at approximately 2:10 a.m., an officer from the Seminole Tribal Police in Broward County encountered Carrero in the parking garage for the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino Hollywood, Florida.

Carrero was inside Alicia Schmidt's car (although a Florida license plate was displayed on car).

The defendant was taken into custody without incident.
