Officials: Baby found in unlicensed daycare dies

NORTHEAST PHILADELPHIA - February 7, 2012

Paramedics were called to a row home in the 1300 block of Hellerman Street just before noon today.

When medics arrived, they found a 4-month-old boy not breathing.

They rushed the boy to Saint Christopher's Hospital for Children where he was pronounced dead.

The infant was among two dozen children being cared for in the row home.

Police say the home was being run as a daycare, but according to the Department of Public Welfare it is not a licensed facility

Police took a woman and man in for questioning. Authorities say they operate the daycare in the row home.

Investigators estimate as many as 25 children were being cared for at the home today.

Most of the children are Brazilian immigrants who speak Portuguese.

A mother of a 2-year-old says she is very pleased with the care her child receives at the daycare.

A friend translated her thoughts: "He likes it here, he has fun. There's a lot kids here so he plays with them. [The mother] likes it. She relies on them and they all speak the same language so it's easier for her to understand them."

Neighbors said they often see the woman who operates the daycare on the block and said she appears to take excellent care of the children.

"You see them sometimes walking up the street and they all hold hands, so she takes really good care of the kids. I am pretty sure she is heartbroken and shattered," neighbor Thomas Wilkerson said.

Throughout the afternoon, police stayed at the scene as parents picked up their children from the daycare.

Officers who went inside said the place was immaculate. At the moment, they do not suspect foul play.

However, they do have questions about the daycare's lack of a license with the state and the number of children being cared for.
