Faithful come together after Phila. church fire

HUNTING PARK - February 8, 2012

Reverend Blake Mills, pastor of The Tree of Life Church in Hunting Park, gave Action News a tour of the damage.

He told us he's certainly sad about what happened, but not discouraged.

"We have a lot of damage inside, in the right hand corner instrument section. All that was destroyed. We have some water damage. But we plan to rebuild," he said.

Investigators say the fire actually started inside the vacant home next door, just off the corner of Lawrence and Sedgley Streets, at about 3:30 Wednesday morning.

Firefighters quickly arrived, but the flames had already spread to the church. The fire was brought under control within half an hour, but the damage was done.

Part of the roof is now gone, and thousands of dollars worth of musical instruments and equipment have been destroyed.

As the news spread across the neighborhood, church members started showing up to clean up the mess, and simply ask what they could do to help.

"Everybody came together. That was a blessing. People took off from work today and came down so we could come and help out with whatever we could do around the house," said church member Richard Lewis.

"I'm grateful the members came together. They were right on top of the situation and they were really encouraging each other," said Rev. Mills.

As of Wednesday evening, there was still no word on how the fire started.

Pastor Mills told Action News he is hopeful that with the help of donations from church members and from other congregations in the city this house of worship will be back open within two months.

The pastor says the church has already received invitations from other ministers to hold services at their churches until the Tree of Life Church can be cleaned and renovated.

A firefighter suffered minor injuries battling the blaze. He was treated and released from an area hospital.
