Rash of burglaries plagues quiet NJ community

MOORESTOWN, N.J. - February 8, 2012

They even put up a message board on Main St. to alert residents to report suspicious activity.

"Everybody's nervous, wondering, 'Why are they hitting especially my neighborhood rather than the million dollar homes?'" Maureen Moorer told Action News.

Actually the rash of 16 burglaries began in Mooretown's tony western section last October. But more recently they have been focused across town in the neighborhoods around Devon Road and Covington Terrace.

"We've noticed similarities in the method of entry," said Moorestown Police Sergeant Lee Lieber. "They're using a prying tool to either gain entry through a window or door, and they're taking jewelry and other small electronic items like iPads and laptops."

The recent break-ins are happening during the day. Police have no suspects, but are looking for a white female in her 20s with a brown ponytail and sweatpants seen near one of the houses that was robbed.

"You feel threatened in your own home," said Chuck Binder. "That's not good."

Binder lives across from one of the houses that was hit and says this many burglaries is unheard of here. Many people are taking the advice of police to be more careful about setting alarms if you have them and locking windows and doors.

"Locking all the doors, make sure everything is secure," said resident Lauren Carter. "And you know, we really don't live like that and now everybody's sort of nervous."

"I've lived in Moorestown almost all my life and we never really locked the doors and all that business," said John Schultz. "Now? Yes, we're locked up."

These days, and until the burglars are caught, when Lauren Moorer goes out for a walk it's not just her dog Lucy who's sniffing around.

Police are urging residents not to hesitate about calling. If you see anything suspicious, they want to know about it right away.
