Record space plunge in the works

ROSWELL, N.M. (AP) - February 9, 2012

The Austrian adventurer hopes to parachute from the edge of space over Roswell, New Mexico.

Roswell, of course, is the site of the supposed flying saucer crash in the late 1940s.

Baumgartner plans the world's longest free-fall.

He might also set the record for the fastest free-fall, at 760 miles per hour.

He would be the first person to break the sound unprotected by an aircraft.

A capsule lifted by a balloon will carry Baumgartner 23-miles up before he makes his jump.

The record attempt is being sponsored by Red Bull.

The company says planning is in the final stages, but no date has been announced yet.
