CHOP issues apology for handling of transplant case

PHILADELPHIA - February 15, 2012

3-year-old Amelia Rivera of Stratford, New Jersey has Wolf-Hirschhorn syndrome and needs a kidney.

Her parents originally claimed CHOP doctors said Amelia wasn't eligible because of her disability which sparked a public outcry.

But CHOP says that was never the case.

On Wednesday night, CHOP said, "As an organization, we regret that we communicated in a manner that did not clearly reflect our policies or intent and apologize for the Riveras' experience."

In a joint statement tonight, the hospital and parents say no decision on a transplant has been made and that the evaluation is a long and involved process.
