PSU, town push alternatives to student 'holiday'

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - February 23, 2012

Now student organizations have banded with administrators and community leaders in hopes of making "State Patty's Day" become known for something else - as a day of service in a town where many residents become frustrated with the weekend's alcohol-fueled antics.

Borough police Chief Tom King said about 15 to 20 downtown establishments plan to close entirely or shut down early. Some students plan to join residents in organized walks downtown to offer a "sober presence" and keep an eye on potential issues.

King said about 50 percent of those arrested last year were out-of-town visitors.
