Mayfair residents fed up with vandalism

MAYFAIR - February 27, 2012

At the Mayfair Community Center, residents say they've had enough.

"It's gotten worse, past six, seven months, it's worse. I think it's young kids," resident Joanne Heckler said.

"Just doing that just for fun and it's got to stop. It's too expensive for these folks," resident Margie Dippolito said.

Over the last few weeks, residents have had their cars spray painted, tires stolen, their cars left on blocks or had their tires slashed. Roughly over 50 vehicles in all have been vandalized.

Police recently beefed up their presence trying to catch the culprits:

"We've been putting additional officers in that area, in plain clothes, in uniform, on bikes, on foot, and we're trying to deter another issue happening and we're also trying to apprehend the individual," Philadelphia Police Captain Frank Bachmayer said.

Some residents say they're beginning to feel under siege.

"We care about our neighborhood and we're not going to let these few punks that want to come out in our community and try to take it over, we're not going to let that happen," Milt Martelack fo the Mayfair Town Watch said.

Tonight, residents were being urged to join the newly formed town watch.

"If we continue to hide behind our curtains and say this problem is going to get better, it's going to go away, it's not, folks. It's only going to get worse. So I encourage you, everyone in this room, to please get involved," Martelack said.

"It concerns us very much, that's why I'm joining the town watch," resident Dannete Barndt said.

Mayfair Town Watch is holding a beef and beer fundraiser Sunday, March 11 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Reale's Restaurant & Bar at 7233 Frankford Avenue.

Police find it hard to believe that someone out there doesn't know who's committing these crimes. So they are also asking anyone who may have information to contact the 15th District Police at 215-686-3150.
