Burglars targeting homes in Burlington County community

EVESHAM TWP., N.J. - February 29, 2012

Rockingham Drive is one of the areas that has been targeted. Police tell Action News there have been more than 20 break-ins so far this year. That's three times the number at this time last year.

Ram Thulasiram is among the victims. Two weeks ago someone broke into his home through a side window, stealing more than $5,000 worth of jewelry, a laptop and other electronics.

"It was a shock to us to happen during the daytime," said Thulasiram.

And Evesham Police say most of the burglaries have occurred during the day. The thief or thieves enter through back windows or doors, many of them unlocked.

Once inside the homes, they look for jewelry or cash - small items with high value. On the unit block of Hawk Lane, $25,000 worth of jewelry was stolen.

"A lot of these burglars are going over the electronics, not touching them, and just going for the stuff they put in their pockets, put in a bag, stuff they can quickly get rid of on the street," said Evesham Twp. Police Sergeant Joseph Friel.

Investigators believe Keith Johnson is responsible for one of the break-ins. Police say he was caught on a home surveillance camera system. A warrant is out for his arrest. They'd like to question him about other break-ins.

They also want to get this message out to the public:

"The biggest message we can put out there is for homeowners to call us," said Friel. "Everything suspicious, call us. We don't mind if go out there a hundred times a day."

And if you have a security system, police say to turn it on. Thulasiram has one, but it was turned off.

"It's just one of those things," he said. "We didn't think it was needed."

Anyone who knows Johnson's whereabouts is urged to call Evesham Police.
