Spring prom fashion show in Delaware

MIDDLETOWN, Del. - March 2, 2012

That's where students were anxiously preparing for their Spring Prom Fashion Show, wearing designs made just for them by local designer Denise Johnson.

"I met with the girls, took their measurements, kind of got a feel for their personalities and tried to design around that," Johnson told Action News.

Johnson has spent 80 to 100 hours of her spare time working on dresses and formal wear for boys.

She said being a part of this project and working with the students has been a rewarding experience.

"It helps out the kids in the school, and they're also raising money for the children's hospital, which is something I've always wanted to do," Johnson explained. "It's one of those bucket list things."

Half of the proceeds from the fashion show are going to A.I. duPont Hospital for Children and the other half will go to beautifying the school.

"We're going to use some of our funds to build up the outside of our school," said program advisor Jessier Lauver, "because we have a lot of pride in our school but sometimes we can't make that shown on the outside."

They'll raise the money through the sale of the clothes, which Johnson says have been appropriately priced in the $20 to $75 range.

"It's very affordable for kids this age," she told Action News. "I try to design things that they would like and be appropriate for their age."

With the Prom just around the corner, the school is hoping next Friday's fashion show will be a hit among area high school students.

They are encouraging everyone to come out on March 9th and support the cause. The fashion show starts at 7:00 p.m. in the auditorium of Redding Middle School.
