Suspect wounded in police involved shooting

NORTH PHILADELPHIA - March 8, 2012

Makayla told Action News what her first instinct was.

"Lay down on the ground," Makayla said.

More than 50 shell casings and the evidence markers for them littered the block.

"We hear 'bang, bang, bang' and we started ducking in the house," one witness said.

Investigators say four undercover drug officers were doing surveillance in the area when they rolled up on two armed men who had just robbed two other men.

As the undercover cops chased after the suspects, they say one of the men opened fire.

"None of the officers are struck. Three of the four officers returned fire striking that male twice in the leg," Philadelphia Police Lt. Ray Evers said.

That suspect was taken to Temple University Hospital.

The other robber jumped in a car with a getaway driver who rammed an undercover police van.

Officers fired more shots as the vehicle sped away.

The vehicle was discovered on the 1600 block of Toronto Street with a number of bullet holes.

Late Thursday evening, detectives say a man showed up at Temple Hospital with a gunshot wound to his back and ear.

They believe he was possibly the getaway driver.

Diane Taylor-Moore's SUV was hit during the shootout.

"I think it's crazy, I think it's crazy. The first warm day of the year and they're shooting already. I mean what's going to happen the rest of the summer," Taylor-Moore said.
